SUPER 64 LAS VEGAS
The Bison Red went undefeated in pool play at the Super 64 Tournament, held in Las Vegas, NV from July 21 - 24. The Reds won entry to the Championship tournament and defeated a very talented Colorado Hawks team 71 - 69 in the first round. The Michigan Mustangs eliminated the Bison from the tournament in the second round, 70 - 62.

Highlights: Jake Maslo tied a program record with 16 rebounds, and added 15 points to lead Bison Red to the win in its first pool play game. Maslo tied the single-game rebound record set in 1999 by J.D. "Bubba" Roberts of Ponca. John Harris was 5-for-10 from the field and added 12 points. Bison Red sprinted to a 27-8 lead with 1:09 left in the first half before the California squad scored the final three points of the half. Bison Red never led by less than 14 points in the second half. Deondre White of Lincoln High had four assists, while Ethan Montalvo had three steals.

Highlights: Jake Maslo was four points shy of setting a program record for points in a game, as he scored 17 of his 29 points in the first half. Maslo, a 6-foot-7 post player, has combined for 44 points and 28 rebounds in the two pool games. He was 12 of 16 from the field and made all five free throw attempts. Bison Red sprinted to a 15-6 lead in the opening four minutes of the game, then used a 20-4 run to take control early. Houston cut the lead to 11 at halftime, thanks to a 15-2 run, but Bison Red made 11 of its first 16 shots in the second half to regain control. A 15-3 run to start the second half helped seal the win. For the game, Bison Red was 40-for-69 from the field for 57 per cent. Trey Moore had seven assists, while Max Cook had three steals. Cook joined the team for the final two tournaments after Dylan Travis was ruled out for both tournaments due to a fracture in his left foot.

Highlights: Bison Red pulled away from a close game at halftime by holding Puyallup to just 13 points in the second half. Puyallup scored the first three points of the second half to take a 37-35 lead, but then was outscored 35-10 the rest of the game. Alex Starkel led a balanced Bison Red offense with 15 points and nine rebounds, while Deondre White and Trey Moore each had six assists. Puyallup led 16-8 early in the game, but a 3-pointer by Max Cook and four points from Zach Clemens helped fuel a 14-2 run that turned the momentum. Bison Red shot 52 per cent from the field, while limiting Puyallup to a 36 per cent effort. Bison Red's defense helped force 23 Puyallup turnovers.

Highlights: Bison Red battled back in the closing minutes after Colorado overcame a 12-point second-half deficit to take a 67-65 lead with 2:22 left in the game. Jake Maslo made a pair of free throws with 1:26 remaining to tie the game, then hit a shot near the free throw line to give Bison Red a 69-67 lead with 53 seconds to go. After Colorado tied the game at 69 with 23 seconds left, Trey Moore hit a pair of game-winning free throws with 14 seconds remaining and Bison Red's defense turned away two Colorado shots in the closing seconds to secure the win. Ethan Montalvo, who made 6 of 7 from beyond the arc, led Bison Red with 20 points. At one point in the first half, Montalvo scored nine straight points for Bison Red, all on 3-pointers. Max Cook was 3 for 4 from 3-point range and scored 11 points, as Bison Red shot 54 per cent (12-for-22) from beyond the arc. Trey Moore had four assists and three steals as Bison Red's defense forced 18 Colorado turnovers. The win came against a Colorado team that featured Chris Thomas of South Kent High School in Denver. Thomas is rated as the No. 1 shooting guard and the No. 5 player, overall, in the class of 2013 by ESPN.com. Bison Red's zone defense frustrated Thomas as he scored just 13 points, including only four in the second half while attempting two shots.

Highlights: Bison Red was eliminated from the tournament, due in part to a 32 per cent shooting effort. Michigan sprinted to a 9-0 lead, but Bison Red battled back to take a 28-26 lead with 3:10 left in the first half. Michigan closed the half with a 12-4 run and took a six-point halftime lead. Bison Red never regained the lead in the second half, although a pair of free throws by Deondre White closed the gap to five with 4:01 left in the game. Jake Maslo scored 16 points and pulled down 14 rebounds to lead Bison Red. Trey Moore had four assists and three steals. Bison Red will travel on Tuesday and open play on Wednesday in the Best of Summer tournament in Anaheim, Cal.
