The NBDA Bison "Gold" team is made up mostly of sophomores-to-be for the upcoming school year. The team is selected through the NBDA / Bison Freshmen State Tournament held in Lincoln on Memorial Day weekend. Formerly known as the "Junior" Team, the Bison "Gold" has competed in summer tournaments since 1991.
2010 Gold Team Tryouts -- a new process
There has been some confusion concerning the "early" tryout for the Nebraska Bison Gold team and I have thus far done a poor job of explaining the process. Please accept my apology as I try to explain the new process. FIrst and foremost, I want to emphasize the Memorial weekend tournament is still going to happen! NOTHING has changed with that process. We plan to have 40 teams from across the state participating in what we call the Nebraska Freshman State Tournament. Teams from Scottsbluff to Omaha will be conducting open tryouts in April. These local tryouts are open to any and all current 8th and 9th grade players. More information will be coming soon from Don Hogue and Roger Zajicek, Tournament Directors. Information will also be posted on our web site soon. Players will be evaluated during the Bison Freshman State tournament and several players will be selected to the Nebraska Bison Gold team.

So, what's up with the March 7th Gold team tryout? This is the "new" part...we have found that waiting until the end of May to select the Gold team has caused conflicts with some top prospects. These prospects may have already been selected to play on another team and/or may have already made summer plans to play baseball, soccer, etc.. thus the reason the NBDA board decided to hold an "invitation only" tryout on March 7th. We plan to select several players at this tryout and select the remaining spots from the Freshman State Tournament. A total of ten players will make the Bison Gold team.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Question: If my player is invited to the March 7th tryout and is not selected to the Gold team may he participate in the Freshman State Tournament and still have a chance to make the Gold team? Answer: Absolutely!

Question: If my player is not invited, or can't make it to the March 7th tryout, and/or he's not nominated to the March 7th tryout, is he still eligible to make the Gold team? Answer: Absolutely, provided he successfully earns a spot on his local area team and participates in the Freshman State Tournament over Memorial weekend.

Question: My player is probably not one of the top 10 or 15 players in the state but he would love to participate in the Freshman State Tournament...should he still tryout for his local area team even though he probably won't make the Nebraska Gold team? With over 400 players (40 teams) participating in the Freshman State Tournament, competition will be tough but we believe the tournament will provide each participate invaluable experience. The tournament has been a huge success for ALL participants!
