Dear NBDA, Inc. Members and Supporters:
I would like to take this opportunity to report to you on the yearly status of the Nebraska Basketball Development Association, Inc. This summer marked the 25th consecutive year that the NBDA has sponsored a senior team in the national tournament in Las Vegas. Every year has been special. The 2005 summer was no exception.
The 2004-05 season provided our organization with highs and lows. The Red squad’s championships in Omaha and Indianapolis, plus the engagement of White Assistant Coach Brad Feeken to his future wife while we were participating in the Mullen’s High Profile tournament in Kansas City were definitely newsworthy and memorable events.
Sadly, the year ended on a down note when a young basketball player from New York died during the Best of the Summer tournament at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. The tournament directors cancelled the remainder of the tournament, thus ending the Reds summer basketball experience on a sudden and tragic note. There is definitely a reality check when something like this happens to a young player with so much of his life ahead of him. The NBDA’s heart, prayers, and deepest sympathy go out to his family, friends, and teammates.
This past summer witnessed a “new look” by the NBDA as it added a freshmen “Blue” squad, comprised of players from the Omaha-Metro area. This concept was approved by the NBDA Board of Directors as a result of input by Omaha coaches and a large number of players who try out annually at the NBDA State Freshman Tournament. The team was well-received by coaches from across the state and will likely be continued next year. We need to tip our hats to Dave Eckley of Omaha Bryan and Todd Ulrey of Millard West, the coaches of the inaugural Blue team. A special thanks for organizing the Blue players and parents goes to NBDA Board Members Doyle Dillow of Lincoln and Jeff Junker of Beatrice. The NBDA presently sponsors four all star teams: Red (17-and-under), White (16-and-under), and two 15-and-under teams, the Gold (statewide, outside of the Omah-Metro) and the Blue (Omaha-Metro).
An overview of this past spring/summer activities would include the following:
•4th Annual spring golf tournament in Beatrice - Approximately 26 teams competed –1st flight winners were: Kevin McKenna, Darin Hansen, Mitch Mosser, and Tom Kropp. Tournament Director: Jeff Junker.
•NBDA State Freshmen Tournament at Bob Devaney Center in Lincoln, May 27-30th – a record 32-team field competed with Columbus edging out Fremont, 53-52 for the championship. Tournament Directors: Roger Zajicek and Jeff Junker.
•6th annual Team Camp held in Lincoln on June 10-11 – 60 teams competed in 4 divisions, making it one of the largest team camps in the Midwest. Ravenna, Syracuse, Norfolk Central Catholic, and Millard North JV’s were champions. Tournament Directors: Mick Anderson and Daryl Blue.
•A record-breaking 175 coaches joined the Nebraska Basketball Coaches Association. Jeff Droge of Schuyler is the President of the NBCA and deserves the credit for this accomplishment.
•2005 Player of the Year Award – Ryan Moore of Beatrice
•2005 Coach of the Year Award – Mark Hrabik of Syracuse
•2005 Dean and Patty Muhleisen Scholarship Winner – Drew Dahlin of Lincoln East
•An NBDA record-tying 33 wins by the Bison Reds – Champions of the Omaha River City Tournament and National Champions of the Hoosier Shootout (96 teams) in Indianapolis; a “Sweet 16” participant in the Reebok Big Time Tournament in Las Vegas (350 teams); Head Coach Jeff Smith of Lincoln Southeast and Assistant Coach Tony Quattrocchi of Lincoln North Star.
•A 16-9 season by the Bison Whites – Head Coach Bill Heard of Ralston and Assistant Coach Brad Feeken of Gretna. The Whites played several close games this summer and with a few breaks could have advanced further into several tournaments.
•A 9-5 season by the Bison Golds – Head Coach Jim Carlson of Spencer-Naper and Assistant Coach Ryan Hogue of Deshler. The Golds made the quarterfinals in Indianapolis and reached the semifinals in Louisville at the Kentucky Hoopfest.
*A 7-9 season by the Bison Blues – Head Coach Dave Eckley of Omaha Bryan and Assistant Coach Tod Ulrey of Millard West. The Blue team made great strides in the latter part of the season, finishing 3-1 in Indy. The Blues notched a come-from-behind win over previously-undefeated St. Louis Gateway and defeated the highly-regarded Tennessee Travelers.
Each year I like to focus on different aspects of our organization which I strongly feel make us one of the top summer basketball associations in the United States. In the past we have highlighted and detailed our special relationships with Bison; the importance of our new website – www.nbda.net; the commitment and dedication of our Bison coaches; the special contributions of our various board members; the contributions of our parents, fans, and relatives; the insight and vision of our former Directors and Presidents; and finally, our athletes who represent the NBDA program. This year I would like to emphasize the contributions to the NBDA that allow us to operate a first-class program. Our program depends upon many different types of contributions ranging from assisting with transportation, food-hosting, volunteers lodging players overnight in their homes, financial contributions, providing meals and entertainment for the team and coaches out of their own pocket, assisting in the sale of raffle tickets, opening gymnasiums for practice, providing help and assistance at the team barbeques, community fund raising, washing uniforms, keeping score and timing games, and for just “being there” to cheer on their son and team’s effort at the games.
As you can see, the contributions by the parents, relatives, and fans are numerous and varied. The contributions by the individuals listed in this newsletter allow the NBDA to keep four all-star teams operating each year, maintain a trainer and media specialist for the program, provide scholarships for college, publish the finest media guide in the nation so that college coaches have the information on our players, first-class travel to national tournaments in Indianapolis, Louisville, Kansas City, Dallas, Phoenix, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles, to name a few, and to help offset meals, lodging, transportation, miscellaneous costs for the players, coaches, and staff.
I would also like to thank the coaches from across the state this year for their continued support of our organization. Our membership list is at an all-time high thanks to Jeff Droge of Schuyler High School. Jeff has been our NBCA President the past several years and with his leadership and direction, the NBCA has been growing and improving each and every year. In visiting with a coach from a major university this summer, he marveled at how our organization selects different high school coaches each summer. He was in “awe” of how special that concept is! He applauded the basketball coaches within the state of Nebraska and their sacrifices to make sure our young players are coached by professionals and taught the game by people “who know the game”! I would also like to thank the Nebraska college and university coaches who joined our organization the past year. The high school coaches and the NBDA Board really appreciate the support they afford us year after year. A special thanks to this year’s coaching staff and families for all 4 teams. They did an outstanding job and they are a credit to the Nebraska coaching profession. Their dedication, commitment, and untiring efforts were appreciated by the players, parents, and the NBDA.
In closing, I would like to thank Bison Products of Lincoln, Nebraska – Nick Cusick and Elmer Wessel – for their continued support of the NBDA! If we have said it once, we have said it a thousand times – Nick and Elmer, we could not do this without your support! Thank you very much for your friendship and financial support of what we feel is a solid organization for our young basketball players within the state of Nebraska. Bill Heard of Ralston said it best in a letter that he shared with us at the conclusion of the summer:

Dear Mr. Cusick and Mr. Wessel:
My name is Bill Heard, and I am the head boy’s basketball coach at Ralston High School. I wanted to drop you a quick note in reference to your company’s sponsorship of the NBDA summer basketball program. I had the pleasure to coach the NBDA White team (16-and-under) this past summer. This was a truly rewarding experience for me, as a coach, and for the players who were given this opportunity.
I do not know if you realize how much your contributions mean to some of the kids who participate in this program. Many of these kids would have never had an opportunity to travel and play basketball without your support. This type of structured environment can have a huge impact on a young man, and may even provide them opportunities for their future.
I realize that companies like Bison continually have to make many difficult decisions in regards to their financial situation. The contributions that you have made to the NBDA program have impacted numerous kid’s lives, and in my opinion, that’s money that’s well spent.

Thank you for your continuing support.

Bill Heard
Head Boys Basketball Coach – Ralston High School

Finally, I would like to thank Gary Mouden and Dick Hudson who had a vision 25 years ago for Nebraska high school basketball players from across the state to compete in a national tournament. During the last 25 years, individuals like Tom Dawson, Rick Collura, Roger Elrod, Jim Dingwell, Don Janssen, Patrick Campbell, Daryl Blue, Sheila Lemmert, Tom Lamb, Dennis Engelbart, John Ballard, Roger Zajicek, and others have helped this vision become a reality. The NBDA has changed – it has grown – it has developed – it is constantly looking for ways to improve and keep up with the times – but one thing hasn’t changed since 1981. It is still a first-class organization dedicated to the improvement of basketball within the state. Our Nebraska basketball players and our Nebraska high school basketball coaches - with the support and involvement of parents, relatives, fans, and the NBDA Board of Directors, - will always be the focal point, as well as the “heart and soul of the NBDA”! This will not and can not ever change!

As Always,
Mick Anderson – NBDA Inc., President
