The Bison Red ended the summer with an exceptional performance at the Best of the Summer tournament in Anaheim, California. The senior Bison team was undefeated in pool play, punctuated by a 67 - 66 overtime win over Las Vegas Prospects. In the tournament, the Bison won their first two games easily and then prevailed in a sudden death overtime game against San Diego All Stars, 81 - 80. In the "elite eight" round of the tournament, the Reds were outscored by the San Diego/L. A. Monarchs, 72 - 68. The Bison Red finished the summer with a 18 - 8 record.

*After trailing for most of the first half, Bison Red opened the second half with a 21-6 run to take control. New Mexico pulled to within five points with 3:27 left in the game, but Bison Red made 9 of 12 free throws down the stretch. Reath Jiech and Ethan Brozek pulled down eight and seven rebounds, respectively. Brozek also had five steals. Derrius Vick had 12 points, three assists and three steals while Galen Gullie had six assists.<

*Bison Red trailed 66-62 with 1:03 left in overtime, but a three-point play by DK Augustine and a pair of free throws by Galen Gullie proved to be the difference. Gullie's free throws came with 10 seconds left in overtime. A Las Vegas shot with three seconds left missed the rim and Bison Red grabbed the rebound as time expired. Bison Red took a 45-34 lead early in the second half after a 3-pointer by Sam Bongamin and back-to-back 3s by Quentin Urban keyed a 11-0 run. Derrius Vick had 20 points and six rebounds while Reath Jiech pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.

*Bison Red battled back from a seven-point deficit in the first half to win its third straight pool play game and capture the pool title. Tough defense in the second half limited West Valley to just 17 points on 5-for-24 shooting. Derrius Vick scored eight of his team-high 10 points in the second half. Galen Gullie and Ethan Brozek added nine points each. Reath Jiech had 10 rebounds. Brozek returned to the lineup after sitting out the second game of pool play with flu-like symptoms.

*A 16-3 run late in the first half shifted momentum and Bison Red never led by less than double digits the rest of the game. A stingy defense that has become a trademark of the team limited Eleate to a 29 (18-for-62) percent shooting effort. Derrius Vick led a balanced offense with 16 points, while DK Augustine added 13 and Ethan Brozek and Dylan Heath each had 11. Brozek and Augustine each pulled down eight rebounds while Brozek added three blocked shots. The win advanced Bison Red to the round of 32 in the championship bracket of the 128-team tournament.

*Bison Red shot 48 per cent from the field while holding the Virginia team to 29 per cent. Ethan Brozek, who was 8-for-12 from the field, led Bison Red with 17 points while DK Augustine added 11. Brozek and Reath Jiech each pulled down seven rebounds. Bison Red scored the first 11 points of the game and never led by less than eight points the rest of the game.

*Ethan Brozek's free throw less than a minute into sudden death boosted Bison Red into the Best of Summer quarterfinal round. Brozek made a pair of free throws with 8.9 seconds left in the second overtime to force the game into the first-team-to-score-wins situation. Bison Red trailed 74-71 with 3.8 seconds left in regulation, but Reath Jiech banked in a 3-pointer to tie the game and force the first overtime. Brozek's game-winner came after he drove down the lane from the left wing and was fouled. His first free throw ended the game.<

*Bison-Red was eliminated from the tournament after reaching the Elite Eight. The Monarchs never trailed and led 52-36 with 10:55 left in the game. A 17-8 run pulled Bison Red to within seven points with 4:33 left and field goals by Ethan Brozek and Reath Jiech cut the deficit to five with 2:12 remaining. But, the Monarchs stretched the lead to nine with 36 seconds left. Brozek hit a pair of 3s in the final 15 seconds to provide the final margin. Jiech led four players in double figures with 18 points. Brozek added 14, DK Augustine had 12 and Derrius Vick scored 10. Jiech had eight rebounds while Brozek pulled down seven. Bison Red shot just 36 per cent from the field, while the Monarchs were 27 for 48, a 56 per cent effort. |
